JenCare Senior Medical Center Hosts “My Father’s Keeper” Community Event to Improve Men’s Health

JenCare Senior Medical Center, a senior-focused primary care practice providing best-in-class care for thousands of underserved seniors in greater Atlanta, is partnering with the Georgia Department of Health and the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce, to bring greater awareness to men’s health. Hundreds are expected to attend the free “My Father’s Keeper” Community Health Event and Resources Fair, on Friday, July 8, at JenCare in Forest Park (1057 Main Street, Forest Park, Georgia 30297; 404-301-4555). The purpose of this gathering between 12:00 and 6:00 PM (ET) will be to heighten the awareness of preventable health issues and encourage the early detection and treatment of all diseases, especially among men.

“About 73 percent of Clayton County residents are African American, and 79 percent of JenCare patients in Georgia are African American,” says long-time Atlanta resident Geoffrey Ngeny, M.D., JenCare Regional Medical Director. “So, my JenCare physician colleagues and I really appreciate how Black men, generally, are more likely than other segments of the population to have undiagnosed or poorly managed chronic conditions.”

Also, Dr. Ngeny adds, “I am happy to report that by staying focused on earning trust, JenCare doctors keep overcoming this tendency among African American men. We deliver highly-personalized, VIP primary care that effectively detects so we can better manage high-risk diseases. This life-changing health fair is an example of JenCare’s commitment to transform care one patient at a time.”

The entertaining and educational “My Father’s Keeper Program,” will start at noon and kick off with a senior dance troupe from the Lake Spivey Community Center who will be stepping, “In the name of Health.” The event features music, entertainment, food, local vendors, community groups, and representation from Humana and United Way. Biometric screenings and blood pressure screenings will be offered, since these numbers are key indicators of an individual's overall health. Speakers who will welcome community attendees include Clayton County Commissioner Demote Davis, along with Valencia Williamson, President & CEO of Clayton County Chamber of Commerce, The Forest Park Ministers Association, and leaders from local wellness groups. The topic of discussion will be, “Men’s Health Empowerment- It’s Time to Take the Wheel.”

JenCare’s five centers in Atlanta (East Point; Forest Park; Morrow; South DeKalb; and West End) bring value–based VIP care to seniors in underserved areas and this event will connect Forest Park residents to key resources like free health screenings, mortgage, rental and utility assistance programs.

The event also marks the 50th anniversary of the Tuskegee Experiment, which is linked to the historical mistrust that exists between African American men and many healthcare providers that fosters well-documented reluctance in seeking medical treatment. This event is the finale of a Men’s Health Awareness series that occurred throughout June, which is National Men’s Health Month.
